They brought on Brian Lee, an ecommerce veteran, as CEO. Clearly, this is not like most of the tech startups that seem to be the rage among Hollywood celebrities.

It’s a company with a social and environmental mission at its core. And in fact, according to co-founder Gavigan, they quite consciously wanted to found a business with non-financial goals that weren’t an after-thought, but were part of its DNA.

For example: For each product, a percentage of proceeds are donated to charities “addressing critical health and social issues affecting children and families.”

This year, the nonprofit is Baby2Baby, which helps families in need by supplying essential baby gear. They use natural, organic, sustainably harvested, renewable, pure raw materials. They track all materials so they can report on what’s known as cradle-to-grave impact.

They use renewable energy sources to provide their electricity. They introduced a code of conduct for suppliers, to make sure they comply with human rights, environmental and documentation standards. To underscore the point, the company is applying to be given B Corp status, a significant undertaking you don’t do unless you’re quite serious about your mission.

Achieving B Corp status would mean the company has a Good Housekeeping-like seal of approval testifying to its triple-bottom-line bona fides. Gavigan, who came from the nonprofit world, says one of his reasons for starting the company was because he didn’t think he could accomplish what he wanted to accomplish in a not-for-profit. His objective, he says, was ambitious.

His research had shown him that toxic chemicals are embedded in many consumer products–even ones that purported to be green. “I couldn’t even find a lot of products to recommend that I thought were healthy or safe,” he says. His goal, then, was to create a venue through which consumers could buy healthy products for their babies and, in the process, to change their behavior–to eat organic food, for example, or use cleaners without toxic chemicals. And, he felt, a nonprofit wasn’t best suited to those aims.
